(Makes 4 sandwiches)
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground lamb
- ½ of an onion (diced)
- ¼ cup of mushrooms
- ¼ cup of bell pepper (any color)
- 2 garlic cloves
- 4 pita breads (cut in half)
- 1 tsp cumin
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp pepper
- 1 tsp oregano
- 1 tsp thyme
- 1 tsp marjoram
- 2 tbsp vinegar
- Toppings for sandwiches: 1 diced cucumber and 1 large diced tomato
- 1 cup white rice
Ingredients for tzatziki sauce
- 1 cup full fat plain yogurt (I like chobani)
- 1 garlic clove (minced)
- ½ cucumber (chopped)
- ¼ cup green olives
- Juice from ½ of a lemon
- ½ tbsp chives
- ½ tbsp chopped mint
- Dash of salt and pepper
Tzatziki sauce instructions
- Combine yogurt, garlic, cucumber, lemon juice, olives, chives, mint, salt and pepper into a bowl
- Mix thoroughly, cover, and let sit in the fridge for 30 minutes prior to eating
Instructions for sandwiches
- Add 1 tbsp olive oil to a skillet on medium heat and add diced onions
- Add lamb and cook until brown
- Next mix in 1 minced garlic clove, mushrooms, and bell pepper
- Add your spices and vinegar and let meat simmer for 15 minutes
- While meat is almost finished cooking, cut your pita bread in halves and toast
- Assemble sandwiches by serving the lamb meat inside the pita bread
- Add diced cucumber and tomato and tzatziki sauce
- Serve with a side of rice and enjoy!
I use to prepare Gyros for a greek food restaurant 3 years ago, I tried this recipe and it’s even better than the one I know.
